What If We Had Facebook and Twitter on 9/11?
Here's an interesting blogpost from GOOD: "I'm Glad We Didn't Have Facebook or Twitter on 9/11." One of the GOOD editors writes about how lucky we were to escape all the misinformation that would have been inevitable, and likely, very dangerous, because we weren't online the way we are today.
But the very first comment is from a Norwegian, who claims to be grateful for Facebook and Twitter in the wake of the recent Oslo bombings.
What do you think?

ReplyDeleteMuch of what I remember about 9/11 is how much misinformation was reported by the major news networks (I was a journalism student at CU at the time, and we spent much of the rest of the semester dissecting what the news agencies got right and wrong over the coming weeks).
ReplyDeleteObviously Twitter would have contributed to the volume of information, but it's hard to say whether it would have been proportionally less accurate than the information delivered by CNN/Fox/AP/Reuters.
Also, many of us were participating in online social networks at the time. They were not as ubiquitous as they are now, but I distinctly remember message board chatter being the first place I saw many of the day's breaking stories.
Very interesting perspective, though.
