Tell us about your ereader!

Hi NL Techies!
Many, many of you are taking advantage of ALD's great deal to help fund a portion of your ereader purchase. I am enjoying seeing the variety of devices being chosen by NL's staff. Tell us about what you bought! Why did you choose that make and model? What are your challenges and successes with your new device? What do you love about it? What do you wish were different? Share your learning with us.

  1. A big THANK YOU to ALD for this great opportunity for staff. I took advangtage of it and purchased a Kindle Fire and I love it. Downloading is a snap! Books are easy and quick to download from both Amazon and ALD's website. It is easy to use and doesn't take a lot of time to learn how to use it! I chose the Kindle Fire after reading reviews and talking to other staff about what they would recommend.

  2. I must repeat Carol's "thank you" to ALD! I purchased a Kindle Touch. I weighed the options alot. I kept thinking what will I want to use this for in the future in addition to reading? I had decided like Carol to go for the Kindle Fire but then I had a change of heart. My main use for the Kindle will be to read. Though in the beginning I thought it would be great to also have apps, I realized for me & my habits, it would be best to only have books available for me to read on it. I have borrowed a Kindle Keyboard which I liked for reading, but I didn't care so much for the keyboard on the base on the unit. I am excited to see the differences then in the touch version that I bought. I also choose Kindle because I like Amazon a lot and they are my preferred vendor. Since the library checks out to the Kindle now, it couldn't be a better choice for me!

  3. I am very thankful for the ALD reimbursement opportunity. Although I really wanted to somehow justify purchasing an ipad RIGHT NOW, the sensible-me prevailed.
(I had purchased a Kindle in April when they went on sale and announced that they would add the library check-out option this year. I can wait on the ipad.) I have to say that I have not regretted the purchase at all. I really just wanted to read on it, and that's what I do. I love the ability to enlarge the clear text, the last page read feature, the ability to read in the sunlight and the incredibly easy access to purchasing the books if they are not available through library lending. It's hard not to love Amazon for that quick availability of just about anything, and pretty hard not to hit purchase! I use it a lot for my book club books that I need right away, but I've also downloaded from the library.
I have to say I prefer using the Kindle with fiction over non-fiction, because it still feels clumsy to reference back and forth to previous chapters, pages or sections easily in a non-fiction text, even with the book marking/highlighting features.
My Kindle is so compact, convenient and light, that I find it hard to believe I'd want something different, but I haven't played with the Fire or Touch yet!

  4. I bought a Nook Color last May. I chose color because I wanted to be able to look at children's picture books and have subsequently found that I can also review some (though not all) popular kids' apps with it. In theory, I can check email on it - but since I am usually close to a computer, I haven't needed to use this. When I travel next week, I will see whether that feature comes in handy. The drawback for reading is that the color version does not have e-ink - so can't read in the direct sun. On the other hand, I think the screen may have slightly less glare than the Kindle Fire. Both are technically tablets - they do more than function as just a reader. If you know, as Jenny P. does, that you will just read books on it, I think a regular reader would be a great choice.

  5. I chose Kindle Touch. I have the Kindle ap on my Mac, and I can sync what I read on the computer to my e reader. Also, the new Lion OS is not supported right now by Adobe Digital Editions. So, Kindle made the most sense for me. I looked at the Nook and found it very easy to use. I really just wanted something for reading books too, so the higher priced readers weren't of interest to me. Thank you ALD for making this possible. I really like my reader.

  6. "Thank you ALD" for the reimbursement for an eBook. I purchased a Kindle Keyboard with 3G and Wifi. My daughter has a Kindle Keyboard and she really likes it so I went with the keyboard . Besides easy downloading, I choose a Kindle because I don't have internet at home. I can use the Wifi at the library to download library ebooks and don't have to be connected with a personal computer. I like the ability to enlarge the print. I can do email and pfd files on mine but I will probably just use it for reading.

  7. I chose the Kindle Fire. I enjoy traveling around the world so am looking foward to not carrying 10 or more books in my suitcase! I will also enjoy the movies, games and music for those long flights.
Thanks so much ALD for this great opportunity.

  8. I had been contemplating getting some kind of ereader since I heard about them. With a "push/shove" from Eloise I got a Kindle Touch. The most difficult part was deciding exactly how I was planning on using it! I wanted somethng very light, "easy" to manipulate, and just for reading and maybe listening. I started reading my "first" ebook last night and I love it!!!! If only I could get more available current books faster and for no money, I would be in 7th heaven. Does anyone have any suggestions? Ereaders ROCK!!!!

  9. For a long time I wanted to buy an ereader, so it was a desire to get this Christmas.
I made a constant evaluation taking classes at the Apple Store for the ipad and Barnes and Nobles for nook color and Amazon.com evaluate the touch kindle fire. I am very happy that ALD my wish come true help me to buy my ereader this Christmas.

Finally I decided by the Touch 3G. I was on the waiting list for a book, which is now ready to use on my kindle touch 3G reading in bright sunlight. My kindle wifi also allow me to stay in touch with my daughter, sending emails more frequently and I can use when traveling abroad. Thanks ALD.

  10. Thanks to all for telling us how you chose your ereader. I waited until the very last minute to make my choice. First I thought about the things you all said here and to each other as you talked about your choices. Color or e-ink? Tablet or no? Touch screen? Keyboard? Use it for travel? Use it for games? Yikes. So much to think about. Then I used an ereader reviews comparison chart and then something called the compirator that I found online. I just confused myself more. Then I decided to use ALD resources with the OnDemand comparison information. That was most helpful since I don't want to buy my ebooks. After all that, I chose a simple Sony WiFi ereader. Frills no. E-ink yes. The best choice for my tired eyes.

  11. I chose to buy the basic Kindle. I love it! I chose the Kindle because I had read some reviews that favored Kindle over Nook and because I like Amazon. I chose this version of the Kindle mainly because of price, but also because for my purposes I don't need color, internet, or audio capability on my Kindle. I also like not having a touch screen, as sometimes they frustrate me and don't seem to like my touch. I think it is great that Amazon has lots of free downloads, and I have downloaded one library book from ALD, although it seems hardly anything I want to read is available from ALD in ebook form. I am really enjoying this Kindle. THANK YOU ALD!
