New to Twitter and I don't get it

OK folks, I took the plunge and signed up for my Twitter account. Honestly, I have read up on it, heard discussions about it, etc., and I still cannot figure out why anyone would want to be on there. Just being honest. Maybe you all have some fabulous thing you use twitter for and could share it with me. Maybe I am missing something. I am @reallytallgirl if you want to follow my tweets, which at this point there is not much!

  1. Hi Erin! It's OK if you don't "get" Twitter--not every social media tool is for everyone. (I am not interested in Foursquare, and I don't use Flikr.) However, if you'd like to Book a Librarian--me!--I'd be happy to sit down with you and show you my feed and how I use it and who I connect with and what value it adds for me, because I seriously would hate to get along without it at this point!

PS. This offer is good for anyone else, as well!

  2. I think the best explanation for Twitter that I have heard has actually been on our blog by Mark. I have linked it as a reference

  3. Hi all, I guess I sort of get twitter, because in this crazy, fast-paced world, we have a SECOND literally to read 120 characters. I tried to follow two staffer's and could not locate them by using their name only. I had to ask the team what their twitter accounts were, am I doing something wrong here?

  4. Thanks for the tips! Melissa, I may take you up on that. Jenny P, thanks for sharing Mark's info...that was a good discussion. Tania, I have trouble with the search features as well!!

  5. Erin, I completely agree with you. One more password to remember. That's why I chose my Twitter display name (also synchronizing all log ins is not recommended)because between FB, Shelfari, personal email (I have 4 accounts), jail stuff, etc. names and numbers are just spinning in my head.

  6. Hi Melissa,
Now I just read your comment. Yes, could we all book you for a jail visit so you can guide us through the Twitter maze?

  7. Tania, I think finding people can depend on whether people set their real name to display and be searched when they create their Twitter accounts. Jail ladies, you know I love coming to see you! Let's figure out a time I can visit. You may still decide Twitter is not for you, but I think it takes time to really build up your presence, relationships, and activity, so seeing an active account may help.

  8. Thanks Melissa, I agree with giving it a chance, it's very new to me, and I haven't fully researched it's benefits I guess. I am following a few people but have yet to post something that I feel everyone needs to know!?! It's a privacy thing with me, this is probably why I still do not have facebook! Please come and visit us anytime!!
