Librarians Replaced

I was in a store last week and the clerk told me about a radio broadcast he had heard recently. He wondered if librarians would be replaced soon. I think this is was what he had heard. What's your opinion of this? http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304354104575568592236241242.html

  1. I see how this could sometimes be useful, but it doesn't sound very friendly.

  2. I love the idea of lockers and kiosks! I don't view it as an end to libraries but as another way of reaching and serving a different need of our patrons. While many of our patrons come into the library and like to interact, there are also other patrons who would prefer not to or have a time crunch where they simply can't. When I go to my local library, maybe because I have been at our libraries all day, I prefer no interaction there about 80% of the time. The other 20% I like to browse or show my family how to interact.

  3. Thanks for sharing this fascinating article! Very intersting. I agree that I see this as just another way to offer a convenience for patrons. If libraries were just about books, then I'd be more concerned, however many of the services we provide would be difficult if not impossible to put in a drop box, including programming and reference service. Plus, there is nothing like browsing books like and in person. Ultimately I see a lot of patrons just looking for a place to be. Still, I can't think of a more amazing time to be involved in libraries. When could we possibly have had more impact in shaping our future?
